No one knows whose idea this was originally; that information is probably lost to the years. Whoever came up with it was very clever though because the Gospel of Luke makes one of the best Advent reading plans. There are several reasons why:
One, it is super simple. There are 24 chapters and 24 days in December before we celebrate the birth of Christ. That means one can easily ready one chapter a day until arriving at Christmas Day.
Two, there is no better reading plan than to read the word of God itself. Sure, there are plenty of authors out there who write a fine Advent devotional, devotionals that inspire one to investigate the Christmas story for oneself. However, what could possibly be better than reading the actual Christmas story itself!?
Three, the Gospel of Luke has one of the most sentimental Nativity stories, the one that reminds you of “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” It’s so classic that you can almost hear Linus narrating it.
Four, the Gospel of Luke speaks to the “nations”; it is Gentile focused. This means it’s meant for everyone to hear. What could be better than a Christmas story that is meant for everyone!
Five, by reading the entire Gospel of Luke, one gets the WHOLE story, from Christ’s birth to his death and resurrection. It’s the story of salvation for all who believe. To say it simply; ‘tis the reason for the season.
I hope you enjoy! Here’s your Advent Reading Plan!
